"HONOKA"

Honoka draws inspiration from the profound symbolism of flowers in Japanese culture. The name reflects the essence of simplicity, beauty, and the transient nature of life. Mirroring the delicate blossoms through Japanese-style sweet bean-paste flowers. Honoka aims to evoke a sense of appreciation for fleeting moments, encouraging customers to savour life's simple pleasures and find joy in every bite.

Our Stories

Makiko - The Chief Creator

Seven years ago, when I moved from Japan to Canada with my daughter and husband, I never imagined opening a store. After relocating, we made a conscious effort to maintain the healthy diet we had enjoyed in Japan. However, we realized that some essential Japanese products were hard to find in Canada. To introduce one of Japan's traditional healthy ingredients, ‘Kanten’ (寒天/agar), I started a business called Kanten Canada. Through this business, I had the opportunity to meet my business partner, Helen.

I was drawn to Helen’s dedication to raising her children with immense love and care, and I was deeply impressed by how she valued not only her children but also her husband and parents. As a woman, I held great respect for her. Her love for Japan and extensive knowledge of Japanese cuisine were evident, and she was more familiar with Japan's treasures than I was. As a mother, my desire to provide desserts that would delight families and create a safe place for both children and adults to enjoy grew stronger, leading to the birth of our store, ‘Honoka 萌の花,' which translates to ‘cute blossoming flower’ in Japanese.

Another business partner, Dan, was introduced to me as one of Helen's friends, and I was very impressed by how she was raising her four children. I have learned a lot from her experience in owning and operating a business and hold her in high regard. With the three of us moms who know the best of Japan working together, I am confident that our store will be a place where families and friends, young and old, can enjoy authentic Japanese sweets in a safe and comfortable environment. The desserts at Honoka, created by combining carefully selected local ingredients with Japanese ingredients, are unlike anything you can find elsewhere.

The overwhelming response from friends, family, and even the children of our friends who loved our desserts empowered me to share my passion with more people. This venture also allowed me to honor my cultural heritage while overcoming the challenges of adapting to a new country. By sourcing ingredients locally, Honoka has not only enriched the culinary landscape but also supported local farmers, providing employment opportunities and fostering a sense of community. Every dessert sold tells a story of resilience, cultural celebration, and community engagement, making Honoka a beacon of how personal passion can translate into impactful entrepreneurship.

I want everyone to fully enjoy the skills and experiences I cultivated in Japan at Honoka. It is a great honor to open our store on Unionville Main Street, a historical landmark in Markham. Together with the local community, Honoka will shine brightly!

Helen

Hello, I’m Helen, a mother of two children. As they've grown older, I've found the space and inspiration to pursue my own dreams - dreams I've harbored since childhood of becoming a pastry chef. My journey took an exciting turn when I met Makiko, whose exquisite dessert skills not only impressed me but also reignited my passion for dessert crafting. We connected instantly over our shared love for confectionery arts, a meeting that felt like destiny.

Soon, another kindred spirit, Dan, joined us. Dan, like me, is a mother with a profound love for dessert making. Our similar backgrounds and aspirations drew us together naturally, and it wasn’t long before we decided to turn our dreams into reality.

Together, we embarked on this sweet venture, meticulously planning every detail from market research to product development. Despite the challenges we faced, our shared commitment kept us grounded and motivated. Every smile from a satisfied customer, every word of praise for our desserts, reinforced that all our efforts were worthwhile.

This entrepreneurial journey has been more than just fulfilling a personal dream; it has been about setting an example for my children. I want to show them that with passion and dedication, any dream is achievable.

As I look to the future, I am filled with optimism. With Makiko and Dan by my side, I am confident that our dessert business will continue to flourish. The path ahead is long, but it is bright with the promise of new creations and new achievements. Together, we will keep delivering delightful desserts that charm and comfort, one sweet treat at a time.

Dan

Hello, I’m Dan, a mother of four. My journey into the world of desserts and entrepreneurship began out of a necessity mixed with a passion. Raising four children, I learned early on the importance of nutrition and the joy that well-crafted desserts can bring to both the young and the old alike.

My adventure into the dessert business was not just a leap of faith; it was a calculated step built on years of balancing family demands with business opportunities. I've always believed in the power of a community, and my role has often extended beyond the confines of my home to embrace local initiatives and support for fellow entrepreneurs.

Meeting Helen and Makiko was a pivotal moment in my life. Their dedication and passion for authentic culinary experiences resonated with my own values.

As we continue to grow and serve our community, the feedback from our customers has been incredibly empowering. Hearing stories about how families include our desserts in their celebrations and everyday moments fuels my passion and reaffirms our mission. We've created more than just a dessert shop; we've built a community cornerstone that celebrates culture, family, and the sweetness of life.

I look forward to many more years of innovation and community engagement at Honoka. Together with my partners and our supportive community, I am excited to see where our shared vision will take us next.
